In this month’s video, I walk through Hesiod’s Theogony and compare it to the biblical account of creation in Genesis. The Greek cosmos begins in chaos and unfolds through conflict, castration, and revolution. The Olympian order is established through the overthrow of the father and the suppression of what came before.
By contrasting this with the biblical vision of creation and filiation, we can better understand how cosmology shapes our own modern morality, politics, and imagination. The way a culture tells the story of the gods determines how it understands authority, rebellion, and order.
